SmackDown Recap for the January 22, 2019 Episode of SmackDown Live
Hour One
This week’s opens with “The Man” Becky Lynch making her way to the ring. Becky says there was a time when nobody cared who she was, but now everyone has an opinion on her. She says the only thing she should be doing is main eventing WrestleMania. She goes on to say she will defeat Asuka and win back her title.
Asuka interrupts and heads to the ring. She doesn’t take a microphone, but Asuka does get in Becky’s face.
Cue Charlotte Flair. She tells Becky and Asuka she is the main event. Asuka jumps Becky from behind. They brawl around the ring area for a bit until referees break them up. Becky has the last laugh after she throws Asuka over the announce desk.
Commercial comes back to show Becky and Asuka backstage being pulled apart again.
Women’s One on One Match: Mandy Rose vs. Naomi
Result: Mandy pins Naomi
- Before the match, a soap-opera style promo package recaps Mandy’s attempts to seduce Jimmy Uso.
- Mandy shoves Naomi into the ring post, following a distraction from Sonya Deville.
- Mandy pins Naomi after pushing her into the ring post.
- Jimmy Uso comes to the ring after the match to comfort his wife.
Rey Mysterio cuts a promo backstage to declare himself for the Royal Rumble match.
One on One Match: The Miz vs Cesaro
Result: Cesaro pins Miz
- Cesaro hits the Neuturalizer to win after Sheamus interferes.
- After the match, Shane McMahon attempts to dive through the announce table, but Sheamus shoves him off the turnbuckle.
Mustafa Ali cuts a promo about Samoa Joe’s eyes.
Miz and Shane are still recovering from The Bar’s attack. Vince McMahon is shown watching the seen from backstage.
Vince McMahon takes to the ring. Vinnie Mac introduces AJ Styles and WWE Champion Daniel Bryan. Styles and Bryan come to the ring, but Bryan refuses to get in the ring.
Daniel says he’s too embarrassed to stand in the same ring as AJ. He says that what he does is for the greater good. Bryan says that the people like AJ because he doesn’t make them feel guilty about themselves. He crowns himself “The Planet’s Champion.”
AJ says Daniel is just afraid to get in the ring with him. Daniel begins to respond, but Vince McMahon tells him to get in the ring. Daniel tells Vince that he and the entire “Baby Boomer” generation are parasites to humanity. AJ leaves the ring and attacks Daniel. Bryan hits his flying knee and escapes up the ramp with his title.
Carmella and R-Truth are walking around backstage. They are discussing their entries in the Royal Rumble match. Then, Charlotte approaches Carmella as Truth walks off. Carmella says that Charlotte doesn’t know what it’s like to be in a match like the Rumble. Charlotte says that she will win because she’s Charlotte Flair, “The Tornado.”
One on One Match: Samoa Joe vs Mustafa Ali
Result: Joe submits Ali
- Joe makes Ali submit with the Coquina Clutch.
Backstage, Kayla Braxton interviews the New Day about the Royal Rumble match on Sunday. She asks if they are willing to eliminate each other. Xavier Woods says they always ask them that every year. Kofi says if one of them wins, they all win. Kofi reveals he has an idea for the Rumble, but he’s not going to tell anyone what it is.
2-Out-of-3 Falls Match: Andrade vs Rey Mysterio
Result: No Contest after Samoa Joe interferes
- Zelina Vega is banned from ringside.
- Andrade scores the first fall with a tope rope Powerbomb.
- Rey Mysterio scores his first fall after a Flip Piledriver.
- Samoa Joe attacks Andrade to throw out the match.
Samoa Joe takes to the mic to say this is just a preview of Sunday at Royal Rumble. Literally out of nowhere, Randy Orton hits an RKO on Joe.
