Cole, Graves, and Saxton welcome everyone to the first WWE Network event of the new season, Payback!
1-ON-3 HANDICAP MATCH
WWE Intercontinental Champion Randy Orton vs. Curtis Axel, Bo Dallas & The Miz
Objective: Win the match with The Miz
Backstage, Triple H and Stephanie are watching the show. Triple H admits The Miz to be somewhat useful tonight and will give him another Intercontinental Championship match. Maryse, who is watching alongside, gleefully thanks Hunter and runs off to tell her husband the good news. Triple H tells Stephanie it will be up to Miz himself how long he wants to keep the belt. Stephanie says she is confident Miz will play nice with them.
Kevin Owens and Big Boss Man approach, with Kevin complaining that Big Boss Man follows him everywhere including the bathroom. Triple H tells Kevin to stop worrying about Boss Man, and start focusing on The New Day. Owens calls New Day clowns, but Triple H reveals The New Day are tag team legends and need to be taken seriously. Hunter respects The New Day but will stop at nothing to get those WWE Raw Tag Team Championships, even if it means disowning someone he considers a good friend (referring to Kevin). Owens gets serious and tells Hunter he can trust him to get the job done. He and Boss Man leave as Triple H looks on encouraging.
NORMAL MATCH
Kane vs. Bray Wyatt (with Luke Harper, Erick Rowan & Braun Strowman)
Objective: Win with Bray Wyatt
Bray instructs his family members to carry Kane’s body to the top of the stage and into the back. They manage to carry Kane backstage where he begins to fight back. Kane eventually frees himself and jumps into a dumpster that blows up in flames. The Wyatt’s look inside the dumpster to find it completely empty. Bray scolds his family members for losing someone as big as Kane.
Universal Champion Seth Rollins is getting ready for his match in the locker room. Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose enter, asking him if he’s ready? Seth says he is and that Heyman better not have any tricks up his sleeve or Triple H for that matter. Rollins begins thinking that maybe John was right all along, which Roman and Dean agree with. They claim that Cena has always been honest in his WWE career and that they too believe Triple H is coming after Seth and his belt. Roman says they won’t leave his side tonight, and to believe that.
NORMAL MATCH – WWE Raw Women’s Championship
(C) Alexa Bliss vs. Bayley
Objective: Win with Alexa Bliss
Alexa makes fun of Bailey, offering her a hug after the match while she lays flat in the ring. Sasha Banks’ music hits as The Boss heads to the ring. Alexa bolts out quickly as Banks checks on her friend.
Shane enters Triple H and Stephanie’s office, asking why Natalya isn’t on the Payback card? Stephanie claims Natalya deserves the night off after Shane put her in a Smackdown Women’s Championship match already. Shane claims to remember Triple H telling Charlotte that he would make Natalya pay for her actions, but all he sees is Triple H and Stephanie protecting Natalya. Triple H tells Shane that his time here is becoming unwelcoming and that he should really reconsider his accusations. Stephanie tells Hunter to calm down, but Triple H screams at Shane to get out of his office. Triple H is tired of working hard for a company that doesn’t trust him.
Shane reminds Hunter that no one brought a dead wrestler back, ever! Triple H yells that Undertaker has been a dead man in this business for years! Shane tells Hunter that’s not who he is talking about and he knows it. He states, speaking for the Board of Directors, that he has every right to criticize Triple H’s methods. Shane leaves and Triple H asks Stephanie to take the night off. She asks why, and Hunter tells her to trust him. She doesn’t want to, but Triple H says he is going to handle Shane and wants her to be somewhere else. Stephanie grabs her phone and purse, telling her husband to be smart before leaving.
NORMAL TAG TEAM MATCH – WWE Raw Tag Team Championship
(C) The New Day vs. Big Boss Man ’99 & Kevin Owens
Objective: Win with The New Day by pinning Big Boss Man
Owens is furious that Big Boss Man lost the match. He storms into the back, leaving his partner alone to recover in the ring.
2-OUT-OF-3-FALLS MATCH – WWE United States Championship
(C) Samoa Joe vs. AJ Styles
Objective: Win with AJ Styles
Styles wins the United States Championship. After Joe comes up, AJ offers his hand as a sign of respect. Joe spits on AJ’s hands and headbutts the new champion, leaving him on his back in the ring. Joe storms out, furious at himself as AJ recovers with the referee.
Shane enters Triple H’s office, asking what Triple H wanted to see him for? As he walks in, a frustrated Kevin Owens and Big Boss Man ’99 leave the office. Triple H tells Shane that he still trusts Kevin Owens, but sometimes tough love is the best kind. Shane is confused and asks what Hunter wants? Triple H asks Shane if he wants anything to eat or drink? Shane says he must be leaving as he is very busy, but from the back of the office comes a different Big Boss Man [’91] holding two cups of coffee.
Triple H asks if Shane is sure he doesn’t want a cup of coffee? Shane in shock is speechless, so Triple H finishes his sentence. He claims that he knows exactly what Shane wants, the answer to why Big Boss Man is here. Triple H makes fun of Shane, saying he knows more about his family’s secret history than Shane knows himself. Instead of explaining Shane with the boring details, Triple H reveals he prefers to just show Shane how Big Boss Man arrived in the present day. Big Boss Man (’91) closes the office door.
NORMAL MATCH – WWE Championship
(C) Dolph Ziggler (with Big Boss Man ’99) vs. John Cena
Objective: Win with Dolph Ziggler
Big Boss Man ’99 ultimately costs Cena his match with Ziggler. Before Cena can retaliate, Boss Man puts Dolph on his back and carries him backstage to safety.
Triple H walks out of his office with Big Boss Man ’91. The commentators have no explanation for what’s going on with the two Big Boss Men, but they notice Shane didn’t come out of the office. As they leave, Graves notices that Big Boss Man ’91 has a suitcase cuffed to his wrist.
NORMAL MATCH – WWE Universal Championship
(C) Seth Rollins (with Roman Reigns & Dean Ambrose) vs. Brock Lesnar (with Paul Heyman)
Objective: Win with Brock Lesnar
Lesnar destroys the rest of The Shield after the match. He F5’s each one through an announcers table, before leaving with the Universal belt and Paul Heyman.
Cena is backstage asking officials where Shane McMahon is? One official says Triple H wanted to see him, so John sprints to the office. He gets there and finds the entire room empty, with only a desk and some chairs. There is a little bit of smoke in the air as well. John, befuddled, turns around as both Tyler Breeze and Fandango (dressed as office plants still) are standing there. They tell John they need to talk, somewhere safe.
