World Cup 2018 : Uruguay Edge Past Egypt
Yekaterinburg, Russia – Uruguay edge past Egypt with a narrow 1-0 victory at the Yekaterinburg Arena. The Egyptians looked on their way to a 0-0 stalemate as Mohamed Salah spent the entire course of the match on the bench. The African nation defended well and did everything in its power to stop a talented, but sloppy Uruguay in their Group A encounter, but it still wasn’t enough to get the result as Atlético Madrid centre back Jose Maria Gimenez scored a spectacular header in the 89th minute to seal the deal for the South American nation.
It wasn’t the best of games for Uruguay as their youthful midfield struggled to create chances, and Luis Suarez was sloppy upfront, failing to convert chances. But the South Americans dug deep, and connected on a late free kick from Carlos Sanchez that found Gimenez perfectly.
The win puts Uruguay on 3 points in the group, behind Russia on goal difference. Egypt meanwhile face a must-win game against Russia in their second match in St. Petersburg.
Uruguay had the major share of possession and 4 shots on goal, but it was a game the team could have had in the bag earlier. Egypt should have earned a point in the end for how well they defended, but ultimately couldn’t prevent Uruguay from scoring.
Mohamed Salah, who is celebrating his 26th birthday today was forced to sit out as coach Hector Cuper couldn’t afford to risk the Liverpool star. With two games left and six points still up for grabs, The Pharaohs are going to need him more than ever to have a shot at qualifying for the Round of 16.
