Southampton Frustrate United In Draw At St Mary’s Stadium

Manchester United was held to a draw away to Southampton on Saturday morning. Youngster Daniel James put United 1-0 in the 10th minute before Saints defender Jan Vestergaard headed home an equalizer thirteen minutes after the beginning of the second half.

First Half

Manchester United controlled the first thirty minutes of the opening half with Daniel James and Juan Mata creating chances early on.

Southampton had the first chance of the game in the 8th minute after Sofiane Boufal dragged his shot wide of David De Gea’s post.

Then United started to gain momentum, two minutes after Boufal’s chance, Daniel James cut inside from the left and powered a right-footed shot into the top corner, assisted by Scott McTominay.

On the 19th minute, Aaron Wan-Bissaka charged forward to get on the end of a McTominay cross, only to volley high above the crossbar.

A golden opportunity arose for Marcus Rashford on the 28th minute, yet his headed attempt from 7 yards out went woefully wide.

Southampton enjoyed a late flurry of the play before going into the break.

Second Half

Southampton came out all guns blazing in the second period and within the first thirteen minutes had reduced the arrears. On the 58th minute, defender Jan Vestergaard latched on to a Danso ball to head it past David De Gea.

United never came into the game in the second half which prompted the introductions of Jesse Lingard and Nemanja Matic.

But these changes never inspired any threatening chances. Southampton defender Kevin Danso received his second yellow card after a challenge on Scott McTominay.

Mason Greenwood was brought on and created a couple looks at goal, while Daniel James skewed a volleyed effort wide.

Marcus Rashford put in a woeful performance. The Englishman never got into the flow of the game and his first touch never looked certain.

While this is a positive result for Southampton, United clearly have a lot of work to do.
