Carson Wentz Just Signed A Four-Year Extension

Carson Wentz just landed an extension for the ages, per NFL Insider Adam Schefter. His extension is through 2024 and worth $128 million, also with $107 million in guarantees. This is music to Eagles fans ears everywhere and shows the organization is behind him. Here’s why the Eagles got it right, and how he’s looking so far this offseason.

Why the Eagles Made the Right Move

Throughout his years, Wentz has made magic at Lincoln Financial Field. In 2017, he had a season for the record books. Wentz ended the season with breaking an Eagles franchise record. He threw 33 touchdown passes and had less than seven interceptions — a statistic he shares with legendary QBs, Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady. His QB rating was 102.2, among highest in the NFL and threw 3,296 passing yards.

Wentz also had four games with four touchdown passes. One of those TD passes happened against the Arizona Cardinals. Wentz completed a 72-yard bomb to none other than Nelson Agholor. Wentz was consistent with great outings like this, which set Philadelphia up for a season to remember.

Without Wentz, the Eagles would have been a long shot to make the postseason. Nick Foles brought the Lombardi Trophy to Broad Street, but it’s no secret Wentz put them in that position. Even against the Los Angeles Rams, Wentz put up 291 yards and four touchdowns. His last game of the season was still impressive, and coming back wasn’t so bad either.

After taking a loss to the “Fitz magic” era Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Wentz returned to action. His first game was against the Indianapolis Colts, and despite getting sacked five times, the Eagles got the victory. He completed 25 passes for 255 yards and one TD pass. Wentz Coming off a broken bone in his back and a torn ACL– still put up numbers. Was it a monumental season? Of course not, but he gave the Eagles a much-needed spark. Besides, he still cracked the top-25 in QB passing yards, with 3,074 and threw 21 touchdown passes.

How Carson Wentz Is Looking So Far

Even though Wentz has had his fair number of amazing games, he didn’t have DeSean Jackson on the field, and it’s giving the City of Brotherly Love butterflies. Wentz has been a full participant in OTAs and building chemistry with some new and old targets. Particularly, rookie wide receiver J.J. Arcega-Whiteside, he showed some quickness in the end zone and put his strength on display. Wentz completed 10 of 18 passes during Wednesday’s practice session. Zach Rosenblatt for NJ.com reported, Wentz didn’t have his star receivers there but got some work in with his star TE Zach Ertz.

Wentz is probably coming into the 2019 season with the highest expectations. Even before the historic extension, people are saying he’ll be MVP. ESPN’s Louis Riddick tweeted about Wentz’s MVP chances back in May.

A not so hot take for people that have seen what he is capable of. With key target options like Alshon Jeffery, Jackson, Agholor, and Ertz. Philadelphians could very well be bringing the Super Bowl mayhem to Broad Street again.
