Chelsea Clinch Champions League Play
Urgency has been a feeling that has lingered throughout the rafters of Stamford Bridge throughout the year. Today would be no different with the taste of a top four position tickling the tip of their tongues. The seventh place Watford would be arriving hoping to spoil that taste. With Manchester United and Arsenal both playing today, a lot could be decided for the years end today.
The Second Act
The unbefitting slow start identity would dawn its ugly face once again at Stamford Bridge. Watford’s Gerard Deulofeu caused chaos throughout Chelsea’s back line. The creativity met with the strength from Troy Deeney would have Kepa on his toes early and often. With the numerous amount of matches in a short span of time, tired legs are met with tired minds. After a scoreless draw in the first half, the blues would come out the locker room guns blazing. Reuben Loftus-Cheek and David Luiz would open up the scoring with back-to-back goals off crosses by Eden Hazard. Gonzalo Higuain would net his fourth goal of the season later in the half to shut up shop. Gary Cahill would enter the match in the 89th minute and receive a legends ovation, as this would most likely be his last home game as a Chelsea player.
One Down, One To Go
Today was a good day. Chelsea clinched Champions League play for next year. The blues would see Manchester United along with Arsenal both draw in their matches today. Nevertheless, the job is not done yet for the season. All eyes for the blues will be on their mid-week return leg against Eintracht Frankfurt this Thursday. Maurizio Sarri’s side grabbed the essential away goal in the first leg and now log to wrap up a trip to the final in the next leg. Higuain returning to the scorers list was a bright spot for today; however, bright spots always seem to come at a cost for the blues. Chelsea look to be without N’Golo Kanté for the remainder of the season due to a hamstring injury. Next man up will need to be the mindset. Winning the Europa League is now the main goal.
