Missouri QB Drew Lock Selected 42nd Overall by the Denver Broncos in the 2019 NFL Draft

Unique Leader with a Big Arm

An intriguing talent with a powerful arm, Missouri’s Drew Lock must receive the right coaching Denver to thrive in the NFL game. It goes without saying that most prospects need that situation. The Broncos must examine how they may fix his consistency concerns to better develop the potential franchise quarterback.

While generally ranked under Dwayne Haskins and Kyler Murray, Lock has much more experience, playing nearly four seasons (compared to one season each for Murray and Haskins), starting an impressive 46 games for Missouri.

Raised in Columbia, Missouri, Lock remained with his hometown team and faced adversity. In his first year, he started the end of the season as a true freshman. During the struggling season, students protested against Missouri’s mishandling of racist events. With the resignation of the school president, the team avoided a boycott for the BYU game that Lock led to victory.

In another show of Lock’s personality, good for any locker room, he stole a hilarious sign from a Purdue student to celebrate Missouri’s victory. Here’s the full story from the 2018 season.

Lock’s NFL Readiness

Lock has decent speed, with a 4.69 40-yard dash and 4.12-second 20-yard shuttle. He has been linked in mock drafts to many teams, including the Broncos (under offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello, who worked with Nick Mullens) and, most recently, the Packers, going off the idea they could spend time adjusting his playing style while Aaron Rodgers continues to run the offense. The Broncos, though, were able to get their man in the second round.

Lock’s completion percentage improved every year he started. His accuracy, however – a make-or-break attribute for all quarterbacks – is still an issue. Another problem is Lock’s footwork and decision-making, crafting his reputation for inconsistency. Ultimately, Denver has gained a prized and hard-working leader with great deep-arm talent and potential.
