Recap: Despite Panthers rally, Flyers win in shootout 6-5

Despite a 3-goal Rally by the Panthers, the Flyers Steal the Win in a Shootout 6-5.

The Flyers barely escaped with the win by the skin of their teeth.  Despite a furious 3-goal rally by the Florida Panthers that tied the game in the third, the Flyers took away the extra point. This extends Florida’s loosing streak to four games, leaving them with out two points out of a possible eight.

Brian Elliot made 19 saves before being pulled for Calvin Pickard. Pickard made only two saves.

Game Summary

1st Period

Goal: FLA 1-0 FLA

Frank Vatrano nets his first of the year. After shaking off Oskar Lindbolm against the boards, Vatrano ripped it top shelf from the left wing. Additionally, the goal was assisted by Jared McCann and Denis Malgin.

Shots on goal were 12-5 in favor of Florida.

2nd Period

Goal: PHI 1-1

Wayne Simmonds nets his fifth of the year. He cut in through the slot and deflected a point shot from Travis Sanheim. In addition, The goal was assisted by Radko Gudas.

Goal: PHI 2-1 PHI

Jordan Weal nets his first of the year. Much like the Simmonds goal, Weal tipped a shot from the point by Robert Hagg. Also, the goal was assisted by Travis Konecy

Goal: PHI 3-1 PHI

Claude Giroux scores a goal from the slot after a bad pass from Aaron Ekblad. It was his second of the season. In addition, the goal was unassisted.

Goal: FLA 3-2 PHI

Frank Vatrano nets his second of the game to keep the Panthers in it. After a odd bounce from the puck off the wall, Vatrano took it in the slot and blasted one by Brian Elliot.

Goal: PHI 4-2 PHI

Wayne Simmonds nets his second of the game. After receiving a pass from Scott Laughton, he took it to his back hand and ripped it top shelf past Michael Hutchinson. Additonally, Christian Folin would get the secondary assist.

Goal: PHI 5-2 PHI

Giroux nets his second of the game. Shayne Gotisbehere fed the puck from the right wing and Giroux blasted it home. Additionally, The goal was assisted by Jordan Weal.

Wayne Simmonds and Alexander Petrovic were both given 10 minute misconduct penalties after a brawl broke out.

Goal: FLA 5-3 PHI

Florida finally scores on the power play with Aleksander Barkov tipping it in from a shot from Mike Hoffman.

Shots on goal were 20-16 in favor of Florida.

3rd Period

Goal: FLA 5-4 PHI

Evgenii Dadonov would get his second of the season and continue the Cat’s rally. After a beautiful feed from the slot from Bogdan Kiselevich, Dadonov would take the puck and rip it top shelf. This would be the first third period goal for the Panthers this season. In addition, this was Kiselvich’s first NHL point. Also, Troy Brouwer got the secondary assist, giving him his second point in three games.

After that goal, Brian Elliot was pulled in favor of Calvin Pickard.

Goal: FLA 5-5

Barkov would get his second of the night to complete the comeback. Barkov would receive a feed from Keith Yandle sending him on his way. As a result, Barkov would slide the goaltender out of position and fire it off the backhand top shelf.

After scoring no third period goals in three straight games, the Panthers come back with three.

Shots on goal were 26-23 in favor of Florida.

Overtime

Despite a power play chance for Philadelphia, the defense and Hutchinson stayed strong keeping the game tied.

Shots on goal were tied at 26.

Shootout

Jakub Voracek scored after getting Hutchinson to sprawl out. He would tuck it by the skate of Hutchinson.

Vincent Trocheck would attempt the same move as Voracheck. He just could not pull the trigger on the shot.

Giroux would attempt a wrist shot but was denied by Hutchinson.

Barkov would continue to create shootout magic as he would use his backhand to beat Pickard.

Weal would add on to his game and shoot one through the five-hole of Hutchinson.

Vatrano would attempt to continue his magic but was stopped by Pickard, giving the Flyers the win.

The Road Ahead

Florida

The Panthers will fly to the nations capital to take on the Stanley Cup Champion Washington Capitals on Friday, October 19th at 7:00 pm.

Philadelphia

The Flyers will fly into Columbus to take on the Blue Jackets on Thursday, October 18th at 7:00 pm.
