Tom Savage Signed As Niners’ Third-String Quarterback
The San Francisco 49ers have confirmed they have signed quarterback Tom Savage to a one-year deal. Savage will serve as the team’s third-string quarterback behind starter C.J. Beathard and backup Nick Mullens.
ESPN’s Jordan Schultz initially broke the news that the Niners intended to sign Tom Savage. In the days following Jimmy Garoppolo’s season-ending ACL injury, the 49ers worked out several free agent quarterbacks. Savage was believed to be the favorite at the time should the Niners decide to add a third quarterback to their roster.
Coach Kyle Shanahan provided his thoughts on the signing of Tom Savage during his media conference call.
“Just looking at the guys out there, there’s one thing I always liked about Savage from studying him coming out of college,” Shanahan said. “He’s got a strong arm. He’s a very tough player, hangs in that pocket, and plays the position well. I was a fan of him coming out of college. He’s gotten to play in a number of NFL games, so he’s been battle-tested.”
Tom Savage’s NFL Background
The Houston Texans drafted Tom Savage in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. However, he missed the 2015 season with a shoulder injury. During his four seasons with the Texans, Savage appeared in thirteen games with nine starts.
Savage opened the 2017 season with the Texans as their starting quarterback. He was shortly benched though during week one’s game with rookie Deshaun Watson taking over. Savage would again return to the starting role after Watson tore his ACL during practice in November. Last season, Savage completed 125-223 for 1,412 yards and a completion rate of 56.1%.
The New Orleans Saints signed Tom Savage on March 16, 2018, and released him on September 1, 2018.
To make room on the 53-man roster, the 49ers have released tight end, Cole Wick.
