The New England Patriots are reportedly re-signing former cornerback Cyrus Jones. Reported earlier this morning, Jones would be signing a two year deal to come back to New England. In order to make room for Jones the Patriots released running back Kenjon Barner from team.

Jones was drafted by New England in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft with the number 60 overall selection. Cyrus was a part of New England’s 2016 NFL roster, and looked to make the 2017 team before suffering a torn ACL. He was placed on the IR after the 2017 preseason and was waived a year later. Cyrus signed with the Baltimore Ravens practice squad on September 3rd.
Kenjon Barner Release
Although Barner has seen some production throughout his career, the Patriots backfield was too crowded for him to make his presence felt. Kenjon started the season tied for 4th on the depth chart. With second round pick Sony Michel finally healthy the team has no reason to carry five backs. Barner has averaged a modest 4.1 yards per carry on limited action, along with some return ability. Barner spent last season with the Philadelphia Eagles and was their lead kickoff and punt return man after Darren Sproles went down.
Player Impact
Jones should fit right in as he has only been away from the team for three weeks. He will most likely be a key special teamer and help out on returns. New England has yet to record a single punt return yard this season. Jones was known for his return ability in college as he averaged 23.4 yards per kickoff and 11.9 yards per punt. Jones has had some experience returning kicks and punts in the NFL. During the 2016 NFL season he attempted 11 punt returns for 46 yards. He also returned 8 kickoffs for 180 yards that season. Jones biggest issue on returns was his ball security. Cyrus fumbled or muffed 5 punts during his 2016 season, causing the Patriots to turn to other players for the job. It will be interesting to see if Jones can reclaim his good grace in the return game.
