NFL Player Sues Former Trainer and Blames Him For Suspension

How It Happened

The Los Angeles Chargers defensive tackle, Corey Liuget, isn’t taking his 4-game suspension lying down. In a move that doesn’t happen very often, Liuget is suing his former trainer, Ian Danney, for $15 million in damages for lost wages. The trainer gets the blame. Liuget is currently serving a four-game suspension by the league due to testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs. Liuget blames Danney for his suspension.

It’s okay if you don’t recognize the name of Ian Danney. Most don’t. However, he is a former member of the Canadian bobsledding team that competed during the 1998 Winter Olympics. Liuget is accusing Danney of injecting him with a substance banned by the NFL. The lawsuit filed by Liuget also contains accusations that Danney injected him with a product that required a prescription. Liuget didn’t have one.

Describing the Suit

As described in the suit, both injections took place in California where Danney isn’t licensed. The 18-page document alleges that Danney informed Liuget that he would be receiving an over-the-counter drug to treat the pain in his feet. Well, this is the act that earned Liuget his first suspension in his 7-year career. The NFL came down with its league policy four-game suspension back in March of this year.

Liuget was the 18th overall pick in 2011. He has recorded 260 combined tackles with 22.5 sacks. All with the Chargers. If anything, the lawsuit is an attempt to clear Liuget’s name and character. Liuget is eligible to return just in time for the team’s clash with divisional foes, the Oakland Raiders. The Chargers are currently 1-1. They are giving up 250.5 yards passing per game which is pretty good. Their run defense could use a little more help as they are giving up an average of 95 rushing yards per game.
