Oakland Raiders vs Denver Broncos Recap

The Raiders are coming off a hard loss last week against the Rams, while the Broncos are coming off a shocking win against the Seahawks. This inner-division game is significant for both teams in how it affects division standings. With the blowout by the Chiefs and Chargers in Week 2, the Raiders needed to give it their all.

First Half

The Raiders shut out Denver at the half with their explosive defense and David Carr’s ability to connect with multiple receivers. Only one touchdown was scored in the first half, but Raiders kicker Mike Nugent made three of his three field goal attempts. Although he missed the extra point, the Raiders were up 12-0 at half.

Second Half

The second half, on the other hand, was a tough fight for the win. Denver and Oakland both began the half with explosive touchdowns. The Raiders fell down on offense at the end of the third quarter, turning it over to Denver on downs. This lead to Denver’s good field position and, ultimately, a touchdown.

Oakland went nowhere on the next drive against a Broncos defense widely ranked as one of the best last season. With the Broncos defense coming up big, the Raiders were forced to punt. Broncos QB Case Keenum then took Denver down the field for a last-minute field goal to take the lead. The score was 19-20 and the Raiders were left with only six seconds to attempt a Hail Mary.

Only thirteen Hail Mary plays have been successful since the 2010 season. The Raiders opted out of attempting a Hail Mary, however, as Derek Carr threw a short 13-yard pass to WR Amari Cooper as the clock expired.

The Broncos now have a 2-0 record and are tied for first place in the division with the Chiefs. The Raiders, meanwhile, sit at 0-2 and last place in the AFC West. Denver heads to Baltimore in Week 3 to face the 1-1 Ravens. The Raiders will travel to Miami, hoping to spoil the Dolphins’ undefeated record.
