NXT Debut and Main Roster Call-Up
Renee Young started as a backstage interviewer on NXT. Shortly after, she was put on NXT commentary, being the first woman to do so. She was called up to the main roster in 2014. Renee became a backstage interviewer for both RAW and SmackDown Live after being called up.
Renee Young is married to fellow WWE Superstar Dean Ambrose. Their relationship was used as a key part in the Miz vs Dean Ambrose feud last year.
Making History
Renee originally filled in for Jonathon Coachman the Monday Night RAW before SummerSlam 2018. This made her the first female in WWE history to call an entire episode of Monday Night RAW. Fans were delighted to see one of the most popular backstage personalities finally make her commentary debut.
Since then, fans have hoped that Renee would be replacing Coach on a full-time basis. Coach was back on commentary the next week. But fans were happy to see Renee behind the commentary booth once again on September third.
Now, Renee Young has done such an excellent job at commentary that she is taking Coach’s spot over permanently. Coach will now be calling the pre-show panel (Renee’s old spot) during pay-per-view kickoff shows.
This of course makes Renee the first woman in WWE history to be named a full-time commentator. RAW has had female talent call matches before; Ronda Rousey, Alexa Bliss, and Natalya just to name a few. But Renee is the first female to make the team full-time.
This is a ground-breaking announcement for WWE and Women Superstars alike. With Renee on commentary, and Paige as SmackDown Live General Manager, it seems nothing is unconquerable by female talent now.
With Evolution coming up (WWE’s first all-female pay-per-view) it would be exciting to see Renee Young on commentary there also. Until then, she will be a key member of the Monday Night RAW commentary team.
