College Football
Every year on a weekend in July, Penn State football holds its biggest recruiting event on the calendar: Lasch Bash. It features commits from highly sought after recruits, along with visits from high-profile recruits that head coach James Franklin and staff are going after. Lasch Bash weekend was a success.
Lasch Bash weekend was a success. This year’s Lasch Bash was a bit different from years past. This year did see some high-profile recruits come but not as many as there were at last year’s event.
How Was it a Success?
This year’s event came with a surprise twist and it was for the better. Three-star wide receiver Emery Simmons verbally committed to Penn State football. Emery Simmons is 6-foot-1 and weighs 185-pounds and was originally committed to North Carolina.
Emery Simmons is currently the second wide receiver in this cycle, joining Florida four-star product John Dunmore. On top of that commitment, Penn State football this week got a commitment from three-star OT (offensive tackle) Zachary Franks who stands 6-foot-5 and weighs 284-pounds. Zachary Franks hails from Baltimore, Maryland.
History of Lasch Bash
Lasch Bash weekend was a success. In fact, Lasch Bash actually became a tradition under former head coach Bill O’Brien. James Franklin has continued it with some success.
The weekend-long event which includes a cookout, campus tours, and much more. In fact, just to show how much this event means to Penn State, last year’s Lasch Bash event produced five commitments in a 50-hour time span. Those commits were Florida defensive lineman Judge Culpepper, Connecticut quarterback Will Levis, Harrisburg Receiver Shaquon Anderson-Butts, Iowa kicker Jake Pinegar, and Maryland receiver Daniel George.
However, Shaquon Anderson-Butts is actually not with the team as he’s currently playing at a JUCO school. It’s also important to note that before last year, the event only garnered two solid commits from Shaka Toney and Cam Brown both of whom pledged and held firm on their commitments until they signed that year back in 2017.
What happens during the Lasch Bash weekend is simple. Football camps, tours, academic and football related meetings along with recruits engaging in talks with other recruits and current players.
In Conclusion
Lasch Bash weekend was a success. You may ask how is an event held for Penn State football a success when it only gets two commits? I’ll answer: Emery Simmons was never projected to flip from North Carolina to Penn State. That’s why Lasch Bash weekend was a success.
