Alex Ovechkin Wins Two ESPY Awards
The Russian NHL player’s off-season continues to be one for the books as Ovechkin wins two ESPY awards. Just a week ago the Washington Capitals Captain was out in Moscow, celebrating with the Stanley Cup. Wednesday night he was named the Best Male Athlete at the 2018 ESPYs. Ovechkin is the first NHL player to have won the award since the award was first introduced in 1993.

Alexander Ovechkin “The Great Eight” beat out Jose Altuve, James Harden, and Tom Brady. Altuve plays with the Houston Astros, Harden with the Houston Rockets and Brady with the New England Patriots.
In addition to the Best Male Athlete, Ovechkin also won Best NHL player. As a result, Sidney Crosby, Connor McDavid, and Marc-Andre Fleury lost to “The Great Eight”. Crosby plays for the Pittsburgh Penguins, McDavid for the Oilers and Fleury for the Vegas Golden Knights.
Despite the fact that Ovechkin wins two ESPY awards, he was not in Las Vegas at the time to accept them.
Fan Reactions
Despite winning two awards, there are still fans who are not fans of “The Great Eight”. Some took to Twitter to express their disbelief that the Capitals Captain won Best Male Athlete.
No way in hell Ovechkin received more votes then Brady, Altuve or harden

After just having lost a Superbowl, New England Patriots fans were even more disappointed that their star Quarterback didn’t win Best Male Athlete.
In terms of the ESPY for best NHL player, many fans believed that Sidney Crosby was more deserving of the award; having won two more cups than Ovechkin. However, Ovechkin has won more Rocket Richards than the Penguins Captain.
And Ovechkin is only 2 cups behind sid…

Ultimately, there are many happy fans out there. Since Ovechkin wasn’t able to accept the awards in person, no one has yet to see his reaction. If the past is any indicator of how the Capitals Captain celebrates. then he is probably out celebrating; just like he did after winning the Stanley Cup.
