Driver Responsible for Humboldt Broncos Bus Crash Arrested

On Friday, July 6th, the driver of the tractor-trailer responsible for the collision with the Humboldt Broncos’ bus has been arrested. He was arrested by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The crash resulted in 16 players and staff dying. Consequently, 13 others sustained injuries. The team was on it’s way to a Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League playoff game in Nipawin, Sask. when the April 6 crash occurred.

Jaskirat Singh Sidhu is a 29-year-old man. Charges against Sidhu are:

  • 16 counts of “dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death”

Additionally, Sidhu faces 13 counts of “dangerous operation of motor vehicle causing bodily injury.” Sidhu sustained no injuries after the crash.

Humboldt Broncos Bus Crash

He was heading westbound on Highway 335 in a semi as a Charlie’s Charters bus carrying the Humboldt Broncos was travelling northbound on Highway 35 to an SJHL playoff game in Nipawin, Sask.

The bus had the right of way. There is a flashing stop sign for drivers on Highway 335 at Highway 35 between Nipawin and Tisdale. The RCMP said the semi was in the intersection when the bus crashed into it.

Sidhu’s Charges

The court date is going to be held next week. Hence, Sidhu will remain in custody. He will be appearing in Saskatchewan provincial court, according to police. The charges he is facing could carry upwards of 14 and 10 years respectively. Furthermore, said charges are: “dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death” and 13 counts of “dangerous operation of motor vehicle causing bodily injury”. 

Updates on the Humbolt Broncos

Darcy Haugan is the late coach of the Broncos. Most noteworthy is the fact he is the winner of the inaugural Willie O’Ree Community Hero Award. His replacement is Nathan Oystrick. Washington Capitals forward Chandler Stephenson is a Saskatoon native; he claimed he is going to be spending his day with the Stanley Cup in Humbolt.
