World Cup 2018: Argentina vs Croatia Preview
Nizhny Novgorod, Russia – Argentina look ahead to a tough test against Group C rivals Croatia today, as they will be looking to shake off a disappointing opening to the World Cup.
Current Form:
Lionel Messi missed a penalty as Argentina drew 1-1 with group minnows Iceland, while Croatia impressed with a professional 2-0 win over Nigeria in the first round of fixtures. In addition, win for the Croats would book them a slot in the Round of 16.
Previous Encounters:
The two nations have faced each other four times – once at the 1998 World Cup, which Argentina won 1-0, and in three friendlies. However, both sides have won a friendly apiece and drew the other one, with their most recent meeting coming in 2014 as Argentina won 2-1 thanks to a Messi penalty.
Team News:
There are no fresh injury concerns for the South Americans. However, the biggest speculation surrounding the team news for them is that Sampaoli may switch from a 4-2-3-1 formation to a 3-4-3 system. Additionally, Croatia will be without Nikola Kalinic, as the AC Milan forward was sent back home after refusing to come on as a substitute in the 2-0 victory over Nigeria.
Nevertheless, coach Zlatko Dalic will be making some changes. After deploying four midfielders against the Nigerians, he is considering whether to field fewer against the Argentinians or to put the emphasis on keeping possession by sending out more creative players.
Potential Lineups:
Argentina (3-4-3) : Caballero; Mercado, Otamendi, Tagliafico; Salvio, Mascherano, Meza, Acuna; Messi, Aguero, Pavon
Croatia (4-2-3-1) : Subasic; Vrsaljko, Lovren, Vida, Strinic; Rakitic, Badelj; Brozovic, Modric, Perisic; Mandzukic
Match Prediction:
The Croats don’t have a good record against South American opponents. Argentina need to win if they are to keep qualification in their own hands. They will face a stern test from an experienced and well organized Croatia side.
