World Cup 2018: VAR Penalty Gives Australia A point Against Denmark

The introduction of VAR has led to a spike in penalties at this tournament with 11 already awarded just seven days since the opening game. This is just two less than the number given in the entirety of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Mathew Leckie’s header struck the outstretched hand of Denmark’s Yussuf Poulsen in the closing minutes of the first half.

This was after Christian Eriksen’s excellent stunner. Denmark played extremely well in the first half, while the second half belonged to the Socceroos.

It was in the second half that the Socceroos impressed and were by far the better side. They had finished the first half strongly and really built on that the momentum in the second. Aaron Mooy, Tom Rogic and Leckie were a constant threat, then there was a lift when Arzani replaced Robbie Kruse.

Daniel Arzani and Mathew Leckie had chances to grab a winner in the dying minutes of the game, in the end, the Socceroos had to settle for the draw in what was an entertaining match.

There’s so much hype around the 19-year-old Arzani, being the youngest player at this World Cup, and he certainly showed glimpses of what’s to come in the future from him.

With a blow to Andrew Nabbout, which forced him off with 20 minutes remaining after appearing to painfully dislocate his shoulder and he was replaced by Tomi Juric.

Overall it was an absorbing encounter and the Socceroos are certain to have earned more admirers after yet another impressive display.
