Kyrie Irving: A Luxury; Not A Necessity

Kyrie: A Steal For The Celtics

When Cavs GM Koby Altman agreed to trade Kyrie Irving for a (broken) Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and a couple of draft picks, the only thing left to say was “How Sway?” How?”  How do you trade 2011’s number 1 overall draft pick, 2012’s rookie of the year, 2012’s only unanimous Nba All-Rookie First Team Selection and proven NBA champion for an injured last pick of the 2012 NBA draft (Isaiah Thomas)? Listen, I don’t care how good a Kia Optima looks sitting next to a Lexus Es350, you don’t trade-in your Lexus for a Kia.

In this case, Koby Altman did just that, allowing Boston GM Danny Ainge to unload all of his garbage onto the Cavaliers roster and acquire Irving for basically nothing. Leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers right back where they ended in 2010, soon to be LeBronless.

NBA Conference Finals Living Up To Expectations

Now despite the King’s misfortune, 2018’s NBA Conference Finals are shaping up to be the best matchups we’ve seen in over a decade. the Celtics have surprisingly gone up 2-0 over LeBron James and the Cavs and The Rockets have come back against the Warriors, tying the series 1-1. Although these matchups were anticipated halfway through the season, what wasn’t anticipated was how well the Celtics would play in the postseason after losing (F) Gordan Hayward and superstar (PG) Kyrie Irving due to knee surgery.

Does Boston Really Need Kyrie?

Since Boston has entered the post-season, Kyrie Irving has almost become an afterthought. Head Coach Brad Stevens is locking this squad in on defense with the starting 5, including Marcus Smart, scoring in double figures. Sustaining a 9-0 post-season record at home, it doesn’t look like this young Celtics platoon is losing confidence and are courageously coming for the crown.

So what does this mean for Kyrie? Well, he has 2 years left on his rookie contract. If you ask me, the longer this team has to prove themselves without him, the less valuable he becomes. And if the basketball gods so happen to bless this Celtics team to win it all, don’t be surprised if the value Kyrie Irving acquires, is in trade.
