Last Time Out
Tottenham grabbed a well-deserved point away to Manchester City last weekend after a VAR-affected game played into the hands of Spurs after it disallowed a Gabriel Jesus last-gasp winner. Despite the fact that City finished with 56% of the possession and dominated the attacking statistics, Mauricio Pochettino’s men gave a strong account of themselves, one that suggested they can upset the title race this season.
As for Newcastle, their poor start to the season has been expected. After all of the turmoil that preceded throughout the summer, the Magpies have lost their first two games, conceding four in the process. For all the money they have spent on their attacking firepower, their defense is the area where strength is lacking. Newcomers Norwich City ran riot on Newcastle with Finnish striker Teemu Pukki grabbed his first Premier League hat-trick. The statistics from the game may suggest that Newcastle deserved more, but in the end, lack of clinical finishing was the determining factor.
Ones To Watch
With a weak Newcastle defense in front of him, Harry Kane will look to dispose of all chances that will come his way. After injury plagued his playing time last season, Kane managed to only record a goal tally of 17. This time around, Kane has had a successful pre-season with Tottenham and looks sharp, doing his bit on both sides of the ball. If included, new signing Giovani Lo Celso could make a tremendous impact. The Argentine was left out of the Burnley fixture and introduced as a substitute at City. With weaker opposition, Pochettino could look to unleash Lo Celso as he starts to get used to the English game.
Brazilian striker Joelinton has started the first two games for Newcastle and has looked quite threatening in the process. A lack of creativity overshadows the attack and Joelinton has had to feed off scraps by making chances for himself. If key playmaker Miguel Almiron performs how we know he can, Joelinton will thrive as the natural finisher that he is. However, coming up against defenders like Toby Alderweireld, Davinson Sanchez and the defensive protector of Tanguy Ndombele may see the Brazilian get marked out of the game.
Tottenham Hotspur vs Newcastle United: Facts and Figures
- Tottenham have won seven out of their last 11 meetings against Newcastle. (W7 L4)
- There hasn’t been a single draw between the two sides in the last 14 games; the last one was in October 2011.
- Newcastle have managed to score in four of their last seven visits to the white side of North London.
With a performance that asserted themselves as a potential title contender, Tottenham should be able to dispatch of the floundering Magpies pretty easily. With Harry Kane and co looking sharp after starting the season strongly, Newcastle will have their work cut out. In defensive terms, Tottenham will have to be disciplined otherwise Almiron and Joelinton may cause them headaches.
Prediction: Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 Newcastle United
