2018/19 UEFA Men’s Player of the Year

The European soccer governing body has announced the three-man shortlist for the 2018/19 UEFA Men’s Player of the Year.

The list includes Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk.

This award is judges the player’s performance over the whole season in all competitions, both domestically and internationally. Additionally, this also includes at either club or national team level.

The top three player were selected of a jury of 80 coaches of the clubs that participated in the group stages of the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League and Europa League. Additionally, the jurors include 55 journalistss selected by the European Sports media group, one from each UEFA’s member associations.

Lionel Messi

Messi was the top goalscorer in the UEFA Champions League. Additionally, he was the European Golden Shoe winner while adding his tenth Liga title. Additionally, Messi is also in the list of Forward of the Season.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo became the UEFA Nations League winner and was the top goalscorer in the finals. In addition, he was able to scoop up his first Serie A title. In addition, the Portuguese also was included in the Forward of the Season.

Virgil van Dijk

Van Dijk became a first time UEFA Champions League winner while bringing Liverpool back to its old glory. The dutch player was also nominated to the Defender of the Season.

Additionally, the following players received points but did not make the top three slots.

4 Alisson Becker (Liverpool & Brazil) – 57 points
5 Sadio Mané (Liverpool & Senegal) – 51 points
6 Mohamed Salah (Liverpool & Egypt) – 49 points
7 Eden Hazard (Chelsea/Real Madrid & Belgium) – 38 points
8= Matthijs de Ligt (Ajax/Juventus & Netherlands) – 27 points
8= Frenkie de Jong (Ajax/Barcelona & Netherlands) – 27 points
10 Raheem Sterling (Manchester City & England) – 12 points
