Yankees Sweep Red Sox in MLB London Series Debut

The High Scoring London Series

Over the weekend, the New York Yankees faced the Boston Red Sox for the two-day high scoring MLB London Series debut. The Yankees won both games with a score of 17-13 on Saturday and 12-8 on Sunday.  Both teams played offensively, possibly due to the slightly smaller stadium, having a combined total of 50 runs and giving the United Kingdom an exciting introduction to baseball.

Game One

The London Series kicked off Saturday with a 4 hour and 42 minute game, only three minutes shorter than the longest MLB regular-season game. The Yankees took the win over the Red Sox, 17-13, for an insane combined total of 30 runs. The game was action-packed right from the start with each team scoring six runs in the first inning. Aaron Hicks became the first to hit a homer in a European MLB game. In the bottom of the 7th with a 10 run deficit, the Red Sox rallied to score another 6 runs. Despite the offensive run the Red Sox had in the 7th, the Yankees held their lead to win game one of the series. Both teams managed to finish the game with no errors and relied heavily on their bullpen with the long game.

Game Two

The second game of the series started out with Boston hitting three home runs. They scored a total of four runs in the first inning. Boston maintained a 4-2 lead over the Yankees until the seventh inning when Gary Sanchez hit a two-run single to put the Yankees in the lead. New York scored 9 runs in the seventh and won the game with a final score of 12-8. Game two of the series also extended the Yankees’ record streak of games with home runs to 31.

London Series Success

The MLB London Series Debut marked the first of MLB regular-season games being played in Europe to grow and capitalize on their baseball market. MLB did a great job of marketing the event and bringing America’s pastime overseas. There is already a second series scheduled to be played in June of 2020 between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs.
