Mets Place Syndergaard On 10-Day IL; Activate Robinson Canó

The Mets have announced that they have placed starter Noah Syndergaard on the 10-Day IL with a mild hamstring strain. In a corresponding move, the Mets have also activated Robinson Canó from the 10-Day IL (quad tightness).

Syndergaard left the game early last night against the Cardinals when he felt some discomfort in his hamstring. He received an MRI this morning so the Mets could re-evaluate him and determined a DL-stint was in his best interest. On the year, Thor is now 5-4 with a 4.55 ERA.

With now having Canó back from injury, the Mets get a huge piece back in their lineup. He will be back in the lineup for today’s finale against the Cardinals and will hope to get his season back on track. He is currently slashing .238/.284/.366 with three homers and 14 RBIs.

Impact Of Syndergaard’s Injury

The Mets are in a huge hole with Thor now on the shelf. They have yet to announce who will take his spot in the rotation. Some asked manager Mickey Callaway about prospect-Anthony Kay (who is currently in Triple-A Syracuse) if they would take a chance with him. Callaway said they feel he still needs a little more time before getting the call. He pitched to an amazing 1.49 ERA with 70 strikeouts over 12 starts in Double-A Binghamton before being promoted to Triple-A.

The biggest thing with Thor’s injury is that the bullpen has to step up. The Mets bullpen has been awful lately and guys like Drew Gagnon and Jeurys Familia are going to need to figure out their struggles as they will probably be needed a lot during the course of Thor’s injury. In addition, the Mets are going to continue to need extended outings from deGrom, Matz, Wheeler, and Vargas to help keep the bullpen fresh and rested every night.
