Is Mickey Callaway’s Job In Jeopardy?
In the midst of a four-game losing streak, the Mets have now fallen to a record of 20-24 and sit 5.5 GB of the Phillies. What seems to be the problem with the Mets? Simply put, they look dead. The Mets don’t look like they have any energy in their favor and can’t seem to find a solution. But does this fall on manager Mickey Callaway?
Who Is To Blame For The Mets Struggles?
A lot of people can make the argument that it starts on the top with the Mets struggles. However, is the front office and coaching staff the only party at fault? Of course not. If the players are under-performing, it is hard to blame the front office and coaching staff entirely. Some of the responsibility has to be with the players. However, they do share part of the blame. Not just Mickey Callaway and the Mets, but all MLB teams, need to be holding their players accountable.
Take last night for an example. Robinson Canó was jogging towards first after he grounded into a double-play and claimed the scoreboard said two outs (which led to his lack of hustle). Though Canó did apologize to Callaway, all Mickey said on the situation was,
“It’s not about sending messages, it’s about doing what’s right and what’s wrong, we talked about it, and he understands that can’t happen again. You don’t just reprimand people to send a message to the rest of the team. You do things for the right reason. I think the team all understands what happened, and I know Robbie does and he has that expectation that can’t happen again.”
This rubbed some fans the wrong way as they continue to wonder where the fire is in Mickey Callaway and why he isn’t holding his players accountable for their actions. So is it right or is it wrong for Mickey to discipline Canó? Is it right or wrong the way he manages the bullpen or deciding who comes in the pinch-hit? Or even the bigger question Mets fans have, is Mickey calling all the shots? Or are there voices from upstairs talking to him?
Will A New Manager Solve Their Problems?
It is hard to tell if a new manager will solve the problems the Mets have. Certainly, a new manager has worked in the past. Look at the 2018 Reds. When Jim Riggleman took the reins, the Reds finished off the season so much better than when they started and left a lot of optimism towards their fans. However, with the Mets, it may be easier said than done. The Mets haven’t fired a manager during a season since Willie Randolph in 2008. The front office also really likes Callaway as their manager. It should be interesting to see how the next two weeks play out for the Mets in terms of Mickey’s future.
Personal Opinion Of Callaway
Personally, I always have and always will be a huge supporter of Mickey Callaway. Sure he can make some mistakes from time to time but can fan really be upset with that considering every manager makes mistakes? No manager is perfect and from time to time, they will always make some mistakes. Sure he may be PART of the problem, however, if players are not performing to their potential, it’s hard to put ALL of the blame on the manager. I genuinely like Mickey as the Mets manager and I find it hard to believe that the Mets are going to be willing to part ways with him.
