Mets Weekly Wrap-Up #6: Inside The Mets Recent Struggles

This past week has not been kind to the Mets. After losing today’s contest to the Brewers, the Mets are now 3-8 in their last 11 games and have scored a total of seven runs in their last five games. It seems to be whenever the pitching is great, the offense struggles and when the offense is great, the pitching struggles. They have not been in sync since the first week or so of the season. They will look to get things back on track as they head to San Diego for three games and then head home to take on Miami for three.

Mets Offensive Struggles

Of late, the Mets offense has been struggling the most. Through the first 23 games of the year, the Mets were averaging 5.6 runs per game. Since then, they are averaging just 2.6 runs a game. According to SNY, over their last nine games, the Mets are hitting .223 overall while hitting .188 with RISP. Pete Alonso has gone through a bit of a “rough stretch”, Brandon Nimmo (who went hitless this entire week–> 0-25) and Robinson Canó have gone cold again, and Wilson Ramos is batting .178 over his last 24 plate appearances. When the pitching is good, the Mets are not hitting.

Despite all this, the Mets have some reinforcements on the way. Jed Lowrie is at Triple-A right now continuing his rehab and will hopefully rejoin the team soon. He will most like take over the role at third base and provide an offensive boost to the Mets lineup. With Lowrie back, the best Mets lineup is shaping up like this:

C- Wilson Ramos

1B- Pete Alonso

2B- Robinson Canó

SS- Amed Rosario

3B- Jed Lowrie

OF- Michael Conforto, Jeff McNeil, Brandon Nimmo/Juan Lagares

With that lineup, it should not be a problem for the Mets to score, however, when one guy is slumping, it seems almost everyone else is slumping too. Hopefully, the Mets can turn it around against San Diego and Miami pitching next week and get back on track.

Mets Pitching Gets Back On Track

After a “shaky” start to the first portion of the season, the Mets pitching has been much better of late. Noah Syndergaard got back on track with a complete-game shutout in his last outing, Jacob deGrom has returned to form, and Zack Wheeler and Steven Matz have continued to dominate lineups. In their last time through the rotation, the Mets starters have an ERA of 1.83 in 35 and 1/3 innings and have lowered their starters’ ERA from 5.32 to 4.59.

The Mets bullpen has also been better. In their series against a strong Brewers lineup, the bullpen went 16 1/3 innings and only allowed just two earned runs. Robert Gsellman and Seth Lugo have been terrific lately. Of course, the Mets have had some key injuries in the bullpen with Jeurys Familia and Luis Avilán on the shelf but the bullpen has been better.

Wrapping It Up

Bottom line, the Mets got to get back on track this week. They are still within reach of first place, however, the Mets are not going to want the division lead get too big. If their offense can get going again, the Mets pitching is already there and they will be making a huge surge in the standings.
