Mets Fall To Brewers In 18-Inning Marathon

Last night, the Mets fell 4-3 to the Milwaukee Brewers after an 18-inning marathon. The Mets now sit a game under .500, and now sit 2.5 GB in the NL East. Zack Wheeler took the mound for the Mets. Wheeler went seven innings allowing two runs on six hits with one walk and 10 strikeouts. On the mound for the Brewers was Gio Gonzalez. Gonzalez went 5 1/3 innings allowing one run on three hits with seven strikeouts. In the final game of the series (later this afternoon), Jason Vargas (1-1 with a 5.75 ERA) will take on Zach Davies (3-0 with a 1.38 ERA) and the Mets will look to avoid the sweep.

Game Recap

The longest game in Miller Park history saw little offense for a game that lasted over five hours. Amed Rosario started the scoring for the Mets with an RBI triple in the second. In the bottom of the third, the Brewers would get their first runs of the game on a Lorenzo Cain single and a Mike Moustakas double. Both sides would remain quiet until the ninth inning. Leading off the top of the ninth, Mets rookie Pete Alonso smashed a solo homer (his 10th of the year) to knot the game up at two. The game would continue to remain scoreless until the 18th inning.

After a long offensive drought on both sides, Jeff McNeil finally broke through with an RBI single in the 18th to score Adeiny Hechavarria and give the Mets a 3-2 lead. However, the game was not over yet. Chris Flexen came in and loaded the bases on three walks for Ryan Braun. With his SIXTH hit of the game, Braun hit a two-run RBI single to give the Brewers a 4-3 win over the Mets.

Rebound On Sunday

With very little sleep under both teams belt, the Mets will look to avoid the sweep from the Brewers in an afternoon game later today. Vargas carries a 1.93 ERA over his last three starts and will need to go deep into the game today as the Mets used every man in their bullpen tonight. A longer outing from Vargas will be VERY beneficial for the Mets.
