London Painted Red Once Again

One of the classic rivalries in the Premier League revives today in a fifth round matchup in the FA Cup. United coming off a home loss to a depleted PSG in the Champions League will be looking to bounce back. At the same time, Chelsea have been in desperate search of an identity throughout the entire season under Maurizio Sarri. This will surely be a gut test for both coaches who are looking to solidify their future with their clubs. Along with the defeat to PSG, United also loss firepower up front from the likes of Lingard and Martial. The battle between the blues and the reds always have something on the line, and today will be no different. A place in the quarterfinals awaits.

The Pogba Effect

Chelsea came out the gates with a positive offensive mindset that was felt throughout Stamford Bridge. The blues barrage began in the 11th minute off an authoritative David Luiz free kick that could be felt throughout the stadium. United’s Romero would come up with a big save. Pedro followed up the initial save with a fiery volley that was met with another majestic save by the Argentinian. Chelsea would have multiple chances early on where United were being held on the back foot waiting for a chance for a counter attack. The lack of execution would prove costly for the host when Ander Herrera would break the draw in the 31st minute with an assist from Pogba. The Frenchmen would double United’s lead by netting a diving header goal for himself right before the end of the half.

The Inability To Attack Adversity

Pogba’s goal at the end of the first half would prove to be the kiss of death for the blues. Chelsea never recovered from the consistent pressure they applied to United without any results to show from it. Chelsea’s execution was subpar to say the least in today’s match. Sarri’s inability to adapt in times of adversity has been very showing as of late. N’Golo Kanté playing out of position throughout the season is one of the many glaring red flags. Chelsea will need to show some character and some flexibility in order to adapt to the hardship when it is thrown their way. Today’s win is just what the doctor ordered for United after that disappointing performance last week in the Champions League. Chelsea will host Malmö in the second leg of their Europa League match Thursday while United will prepare for a big clash against Liverpool.
