Mets Re-Sign Catcher Devin Mesoraco To Minor-League Deal
The Mets have re-signed catcher Devin Mesoraco to a minor-league deal with an invite to Spring Training. Mesoraco, should he make the team, will serve primarily as the back-up to Wilson Ramos and will come off the bench in the late innings. The 30-year-old catcher split time between the Mets and Reds in 2018. He was traded from the Reds back in May that sent Matt Harvey to Cincinnati. In 66 games with the Mets, Mesoraco .221 with 11 homers and 33 RBIs. He caught almost all of Jacob deGrom’s starts and with recently-acquired catcher Wilson Ramos, Mesoraco is not expected to play a huge role for the Mets in 2019. He will primarily play off the bench, if he makes the team, and will be second-string to Travis d’Arnaud.
Mesoraco Prior To The Mets
Prior to getting traded to the Mets, Mesoraco was an All-Star back in 2014 for the Reds. During that season, he hit 25 homers with 85 RBIs. However, consistency has been an issue for Mesoraco as he battled through numerous injuries over time. To break it down, Mesoraco had left hip surgery in 2015, left shoulder surgery in 2016, and right hip surgery in 2016. In 2017, he missed even more time with a broken foot and a left shoulder strain. When he was acquired by the Mets, Mesoraco missed more time with neck and back issues. Injuries have always plagued him over the past few years, however, when Mesoraco was not hurt, he proved to be a vital asset to the Reds and Mets offenses.
