Phillies Trade For Prized Catcher J.T. Realmuto From Marlins

The Phillies have acquired All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto from the Miami Marlins. In exchange, the Marlins acquired catcher Jorge Alfaro, pitching prospects Sixto Sanchez and Will Stewart, and international bonus pool money. Realmuto has been one of the hot-commodities this offseason. In 2018, Realmuto batted .277 with 21 homers, 74 RBIs, and 74 runs scored. Along with this, the 27-year-old catcher earned his first All-Star game appearance and first Silver Slugger Award. His defense was also some of the best in Major League Baseball. Realmuto made just seven errors in 2018 and had just eight passed balls. Realmuto will head to a young Phillies team that looks to avoid a repeat of last year’s collapse and hope to return to October baseball.

The Marlins Return

The Marlins got a great return from the Phillies. One of the returning pieces is young catcher Jorge Alfaro. Alfaro, 25, made is MLB-debut back in 2016 and had a solid year in 2018. He slashed .262/.324/.407 with 10 homers, 37 RBIs, and 35 runs scored for the Phillies. He’ll take the reigns of the catching duties in Miami as they continue to rebuild.

The Marlins also acquired pitching prospects, Sixto Sanchez and Will Stewart. Sixto Sanchez played 2018 with Class-A Clearwater Threshers. He pitched to an ERA of 2.51 with 45 strikeouts in 46 2/3 innings. He was the Phillies top pitching prospect in 2018 despite having injury issues during the season.

Will Stewart is another top pitching prospect. With the Lakewood BlueClaws of the South Atlantic League, Stewart pitched to a record of 8-1 with a 2.06 ERA along with a WHIP of .98.

Overall, the Marlins got a great return for J.T. Realmuto. The got a potential super-star catcher to replace Realmuto and two guys that could potentially head their pitching staff in the coming years.
