CFP National Champions! Clemson Throttles Alabama 44-16
The Clemson Tigers are your new kings of college football. Clemson throttled Alabama 44-16 Monday night to become the 2018 CFP National Champions. The Tigers become the first team in the modern college football era to go 15-0.
Trevor Lawrence becomes the first true freshman quarterback since Oklahoma QB Jamelle Holieway in 1985 to win a national championship. Lawrence had an incredible performance throwing for 347 yards and three touchdowns. The receiving duo Justyn Ross and Tee Higgins were a nightmare for Alabama’s defense as the receiving duo combined for 234 yards receiving and 2 receiving touchdowns. Travis Etienne also made the Crimson Tide pay as he had 86 yards rushing and three total touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving).
Defense Wins Championships
The story all year long at Clemson was how all four starters from the previous year vowed to come back and finish the job. Monday night they and the Clemson defense did just that by cracking down on Alabama and shutting them out the entire second half of play. Clemson rattled Tua Tagovailoa after a strong first quarter from the Heisman finalist. On Alabama’s first drive, Clemson corner A.J. Terrell actually picked off Tagovailoa’s pass and took it to the house for a touchdown. In the second quarter, Trayvon Mullen would also pick off Tagovailoa to set up a Clemson scoring drive. Overall, at times it wasn’t pretty but Clemson’s defense held strong and mauled Alabama when it mattered most.
Closing Thoughts
Clemson did something nobody saw coming. Most folks could see either team winning but Alabama losing by 28 points? Not even close. Clemson deserved this win.
Honestly, college football fans may want to get ready for Clemson vs Alabama Part V. Alabama may have been given a beat down but this Crimson Tide team was also young. Clemson, too. The Tigers may be losing some experience but there is talent in the wings waiting to take the place of the upperclassmen leaving.
Now, let the countdown to College Football’s 2019-2020 season begin! Congrats Clemson on winning the CFP National Championship!
