Manchester City Through to the Semifinals on Penalties

Manchester City have advanced to the Carabao Cup semifinals thanks to a penalty shootout victory against Leicester City. City, who won the competition last year, have won it three times in the past five years.

Additionally, this is Manchester City’s fifth consecutive win in a penalty shootout dating back to the 2008/09 season. Nevertheless, Leicester City already won two penalty shootouts in the competition this year before facing City. They beat Wolverhampton and Southampton in the third and fourth rounds respectively. This is the second consecutive season that Leicester have been knocked out by Manchester City.

Stunning Strikes

Both goals scored in this match struck very well to say the least. Kevin De Bruyne scored brilliantly from just outside the box in the 14th minute. In addition, the opening goal was a low driven shot that tucked into the bottom corner. Leicester goalkeeper Danny Ward had no chance at saving it.

Late in the second half, substitute Marc Albrighton hit a fantastic volley to finish off a blistering counter attack for the hosts. The English winger dramatically changed the game when he came on as a substitute, replacing Vicente Iborra in the 61st minute.  Fresh legs were needed and he brought even more than that. His goal sent the match to penalties.

Penalty Shootout

Leicester City will be kicking themselves after such a poor showing in the shootout on Tuesday night. Manchester City won the shootout 3-1. Harry Maguire took the first spot kick and was the only Leicester player to score. Fuchs and Soyuncu both missed the goal entirely while Maddison had his saved. For Manchester City, Gundogan and Jesus scored before Zinchenko netted the winner. Manchester City await the two matches on Wednesday to see who they can draw in the semifinal.
