Chicago Bears Secure Commanding Victory Over Division Foe

The Chicago Bears overwhelmed the Detroit Lions as they won the contest 34-22. The Bears outscored the Lions by 24 points throughout the first three quarters. Bears’ quarterback Mitchell Trubisky threw for 355 yards and tossed three touchdowns in the victory.

The Detroit Lions were -3 in the turnover category while Chicago had zero turnovers. Chicago also averaged an efficient 7.6 yards per play. The victory gives Chicago the sole lead of the NFC North.

First Half

The Chicago Bears received the ball first to begin the first half. The Bears wasted little time putting points on the board as they drove 75 yards in just eight plays. Mitchell Trubisky went 5-5 for 61 yards on the opening drive as the Bears went up 7-0.

Following a Lions punt, the Bears continued their dominance. The Bears went on an 8-play, 91-yard drive, extending the lead to 13. Wide receiver Allen Robinson had 63 yards and a touchdown on the drive.

Sheer Domination

Another Lions punt ensued after just three plays on offense. The Chicago Bears responded by scoring on their 3rd consecutive possession. The 4-play, 71-yard scoring drive finished with a 45-yard catch-and-run from rookie wide receiver Anthony Miller. A missed two-point conversion gave the Bears a 19-0 lead.

The next Lions drive ended prematurely. Cornerback Bryce Callahan forced the first turnover of the game as he snagged an interception. The interception gave Chicago the ball on Detroit’s 18-yard line.

Chicago’s offensive momentum continued as they scored their fourth consecutive touchdown of the half. Mitchell Trubisky finished the drive with a four-yard rushing touchdown, his third of the season. The Bears extended the lead to 26.

The Detroit Lions came out rejuvenated in their final drive of the first half. The Lions’ 14-play, 75-yard drive lasted over seven minutes. Lions running back Kerryon Johnson finished the drive off as the Lions scored their first points of the game. Chicago held a 26-7 lead at the half.

2nd Half

The Detroit Lions received the ball to start the second half. They continued to build off the momentum of the previous drive. While their drive eventually stalled out, Detroit kicked a field goal to shorten the lead to 16.

The Bears next drive began on their own 19-yard line. The drive began with a 55-yard catch by Anthony Miller. However, the promising drive ended with a missed 41-yard field goal from kicker Cody Parkey.

The next five drives led to zero combined points. Detroit’s second turnover highlighted the scoring drought. The scoring drought lasted over five minutes.

Fireworks

The second half began to heat up as the Bears reached the end zone in just two plays. Allen Robinson finished the 50-yard drive with a 26-yard receiving touchdown, his second of the game. The score extended the Chicago lead, making the score 34-10.

The Detroit Lions responded with a 12-play drive. However, the drive ended with a Prince Amukamara interception. The interception was the Lions’ third turnover of the game.

Too Little, Too Late

After forcing a Chicago punt, Detroit attempted to claw their way back into the game. Detroit reached the end zone in just five plays as wide receiver Kenny Golladay scored a touchdown to shorten the lead to 18. A missed two-point conversion attempt kept the score at 34-16 with eight and a half minutes to spare.

The Lions then attempted an onside kick as the game clock dwindled. Detroit recovered the onside kick and the comeback began. Detroit got into the end zone in just over a minute as Kerryon Johnson scored his second touchdown of the game. Yet Detroit failed again on a two-point conversion attempt, making the score 34-22.

The Chicago Bears received the ball with a little over seven minutes remaining. The Bears made the most of this possession as they held the ball for over six minutes. The drive ended with a punt; however, Detroit would have very little time to continue the comeback as Chicago secured a 34-22 victory.
