College Football Upset Alert for Week 7
Week 7 of college football is here and we are almost halfway through with the college football season. We are almost at the point where a loss could potentially knock a top contender out of the College Football Playoff race. Teams are trying to stay laser focused, but that doesn’t mean strange things cannot happen on Saturdays! Last week Utah upset #5 Stanford. Who will it be this week? I present to you: college football teams on upset alert for Week 7!
Minnesota at #3 Ohio State
I know what you’re thinking…Ohio State on upset alert? They score more points than the rest of the conference combined! Yes, it is no secret that the Buckeyes have been scoring their fannies off, but think about it. NO ONE would expect Minnesota to go into the Horseshoe and beat Ohio State. This is Minnesota’s super bowl. Head Coach P.J. Fleck is looking for a big win for the Gophers, so Saturday could be a sneaky time to get it. Do I expect it? No, but a noon game against someone less than exciting could see Ohio State at risk for sleep walking in and possibly opening itself up to being beat.
#14 Florida at Vanderbilt
The ole “big win, total let down” after party look here. Florida knocked off #23 Mississippi State last week in a shocking upset 13-6. The Gators travel to Nashville to take on Vanderbilt at 12 pm Saturday. Florida is riding high off of the big win, but never count out the pesky Commodores. If Vanderbilt can make just enough plays on defense, this is a game the Commodores can take. This definitely looks like a possible barn burner in Nashville come Saturday.
Pittsburgh at #5 Notre Dame
Raise your hand if you have seen this story before. Pittsburgh seems like no threat to this top team; guaranteed win! Well, just ask West Virginia, Clemson, and Miami fans if the Panthers have played spoiler before (hint: yes). Pittsburgh just has a knack for turning on the charm when playing a top ranked opponent. Truthfully, the stats say that Notre Dame has too much offense for this Pittsburgh squad. Truth be told, Pittsburgh wasn’t supposed to come close in the other games either. Keep your eyes peeled on this game, college football fans!
Michigan State at #8 Penn State
Penn State lost a heartbreak to Ohio State two weeks ago before their bye week. Hopefully one loss won’t account for two since Michigan State heads to Happy Valley this weekend. The Spartans feature a stout rush defense allowing less than 34 yards rushing a game. Penn State is going to test that statistic averaging over 260 yards rushing a game. Michigan State has had close losses, so this is going to be a good game to watch. I think Penn State has the game changer at QB with Trace McSorley to keep the Spartans at bay. Still, this is far from a guaranteed win for the Nittany Lions.
#6 West Virginia at Iowa State
Mountaineer fans don’t want to hear it, but Iowa State is always a threat at home. The Cyclones have already taken down Oklahoma State this season and made Oklahoma sweat it out to only win by 10. West Virginia needs to not let Iowa State hang around. Strange things happen in Ames and for whatever reason teams have a hard time in Iowa State’s house. This is definitely another must watch game for Saturday, just for the sheer fact that Iowa State seems to catch fire at home and pull off the upsets.
What do you think? Are there other teams that should be on upset alert?
