Georgetown Lands Center Malcolm Wilson

The Georgetown Hoyas made a coaching change not long ago, releasing John Thompson III while bringing in Patrick Ewing. Ewing’s hire was mainly an attempt to bring back the nostalgic-feel of Georgetown ‘big man’ basketball. The Hoyas took one step closer in trying to obtain their former identity, with recruit Malcolm Wilson committing on Tuesday.

Wilson is a 6-foot-11 center entering his senior season at Ridge View High in Columbia, South Carolina. He is a three-star recruit with an overall state ranking at four. He also ranks within the top 40 centers nationally as well as the top 200 players overall. Georgetown was the final choice for Wilson after also considering both Clemson and Rice.

An Impressive Prep Career

Wilson would see his junior season end with an average of about nine points and just over six blocks. His glass-work and defensive presence led Ridge View to a state championship. Quite literally, as Wilson would make the game-winning block to go along with a free throw to seal the championship.

Ewing’s Impact

Wilson admits that playing for Patrick Ewing was helpful in his decision, as coach Ewing already began teaching the young talent. Malcolm claims his future coach saw speed in Wilson’s game but lacked strength. He admits that is something he wants to work on, in order to develop an all-around game. The opportunity to work with Ewing, along with the academics, convinced Wilson to call Georgetown home.

Wilson’s choice marks the second 2019 center to commit for Ewing’s squad, as Timothy Igohoefe also comes in at 6-foot-10. With Georgetown hoping Ewing’s hire would bring in more big men, it certainly seems to be the case for the 2019 class thus far.
