SoCon Men’s Basketball Schedule Release

Announcing its league play on Wednesday, the Southern Conference (SoCon) revealed their 18-game intraleague schedule. The SoCon’s 10 men’s basketball teams will all play double-round-robin, which comes out to 90 league contests. Conference play opens with three games on Saturday, Dec. 1, before ramping up for good in January.

The Citadel hosts Mercer at 1 p.m. on Dec. 1 to debut the conference schedule, with Wofford welcoming East Tennessee State (ETSU). Western Carolina men’s basketball head coach Mark Prosser makes his league debut that same day, facing Furman. Six more SoCon games take place in December. Beginning Jan. 3, the teams will play a Thursday-Saturday conference slate for the next nine weeks, with the regular season wrapping up on Saturday, Mar. 2.

SoCon Championship

The SoCon Basketball Championship presented by General Shale will be held Mar. 8-11 at the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville, North Carolina. The championship game plans to air on ESPN at 7 p.m., with tickets available on Thurs., Nov. 1. North Carolina-Greensboro (UNCG) looks to defend their SoCon crown, winning both the regular season and tournament a season ago.

UNCG has won the last two regular-seasons, splitting 2016 with both ETSU and Furman. ETSU’s appearance in last year’s SoCon Championship was their third straight, going 1-2 in those games. Since 2013, Davidson is the only team to not win the conference tournament after winning the regular season.

Wofford vs North Carolina

The Wofford Terriers take on the UNC Tar Heels again this season. Wofford won last year’s game for a huge SoCon upset. The Tar Heels ranked fifth in the nation during the Terriers upset, defeating UNC by four points at Chapel Hill. UNC was last year’s host, therefore Wofford will claim host duties this season.
