Karl-Anthony Towns Agrees To Max Contract Extension With Timberwolves
The Minnesota Timberwolves finally have done something with their franchise center Karl-Anthony Towns by giving him a max contact extension. The deal is for five-years, $190 million that will keep Towns in Minnesota for the next several years. All of this started when Towns said he wouldn’t discuss his contract until the Jimmy Butler drama had been dealt with. With this signing, all things point towards how close the team is to trading Butler. They never blended well their first season together and it looks like they are not going to give it a round 2 chance.
Beginning of Domino Effect
This is huge for Minnesota Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor. He has been criticized a lot lately with his passiveness to do moves despite his frustration with head coach Tom Thibobeau and GM Scott Layden. His biggest and easiest move to do was lock up Towns long term. Now, his next goal is to trade Butler despite Thibodeau being hesitant to trade him.
With Andrew Wiggins’ contract extension about to start, and Towns just signing his, the Timberwolves can now focus on building around them. With Taylor’s displeasure with coach Thibodeau and GM Layden, he needs to find a new front office that can cater to Towns and Wiggins.
This signing means that Butler is out the door, if not on a plane out of Minnesota. Taylor has told Thibodeau and Layden that Butler is on the trading block regardless of their feelings. Now, they have to find the best trade that won’t screw the Timberwolves over too much. Plenty are out there, and a couple of them are very enticing. Now, it’s to pick one would work best for the franchise.
Yes, the Timberwolves finally addressed and got the most important deal done. However, there are still more things that need to bebe sort out by the beginning of the season. From front office issues, to player issues (aka the Butler trade drama), the Timberwolves have a lot to work on.
