Forward Troy Brouwer signed a one-year, one-way deal with the Florida Panthers on Monday

The Florida Panthers have not made a huge mark this offseason but still, have made deals. They have signed all of their restricted free agents that played for the squad and acquired new faces such as Mike Hoffman and Mark Letestu. But it seems general manager Dale Tallon made room for another forward, a forward with playoff experience and a Stanley Cup under his belt. Forward Troy Brouwer signed a one-year, one-way deal with the Florida Panthers on Monday.

Troy Brouwer’s Career Overview

Chicago

Troy Brouwer was selected in the seventh round by the Chicago Blackhawks at the 2004 NHL Draft. He would develop his game in the AHL for two years before being called up in 2006. That year, he would play only 10 games, finishing with a -7 rating. While this seemed bad for his first set of NHL games, Brouwer was still working on his game. However, this did impact his role in the lineup as the next year he would only play two games. That year, he notched his first career NHL point with an assist.

In 2008, he would become a staple for Chicago’s lineup. Brouwer would go on to play 69 games, notching 26 points in those games. Additionally, he finally got a taste of playoff hockey, playing 17 playoff games with two points in those games. He would not miss the playoffs until the 2013-2014 season. In 2010, Brouwer would hoist the Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks, achieving the ultimate prize of anyone’s NHL career.

Washington

In 2011, Brouwer was traded to the Washington Capitals for a first round pick in that year’s draft. However, Brouwer would work hard to make sure he had a successful career in the United States’ capital, and the stats show that he did. In the 2013-2014 NHL season, he would hit a career-high 43 points while also finding the back of the net a career-high 25 times. The following season, he repeated that performance and made another trip to the playoffs. That year, he would play in 14 playoff games but only scored three points.

St. Louis

In 2015, Brouwer was traded to the St. Louis Blues along with Phoenix Copley and Washington’s 3rd round pick all in exchange for forward T.J. Oshie. He would finish his first and only season with the Blues with 39 points in 82 games. In addition, he would play a career-high 20 playoff games that season, notching 13 points.

Calgary

In 2016, Brouwer signed with the Calgary Flames. Prior to the start of his first stint with Calgary, he was named an alternative captain. However, he would hit a huge slump in his time there. Brouwer would only score 25 points in 74 games that regular season. He would go on to also play four playoff games that year, notching two assists. The following year, he declined even further scoring only six goals in 76 games while missing the playoffs that season. Earlier this month, the final two years of Brouwers contract were bought out.

Contract Details

Troy Brouwer signed a one-year, one-way deal worth $850,000. This is shocking considering he was making $4.5 million a year with Calgary before he was bought out. So money wise, this was a steal for general manager Dale Tallon. According to Capfriendly.com, this leaves the Panthers with less than $2 million in cap space and ups their cap hit to $77.5 million.
