Cole Hamels Tosses First Complete Game For The Cubs This Season
Cole Hamels has had a Justin Verlander like resurgence since coming to the Cubs. And they didn’t have to give up much either to have him come over. Tossing the first complete game for the Cubs this season. Cole Hamels is certainly looking like a brand new man. Mixing his pitches a lot more effectively and throwing them with much more conviction. The offense came to play as well, scoring seven runs on 12 hits in the game. Anthony Rizzo and Javier Baez lead the offensive with four RBIs combined.
Cole Hamels A New Type Of Pitcher
What can we say about this man, the 35-year-old lefty pitcher looks better than ever in his past five starts. Before coming to Chicago, Cole had an ERA of 4.72 and in just five starts has been able to shrink it down almost an entire run and sits at a 3.82 on the season. While holding a 0.79 since coming to the Cubs with a WHIP of 0.94 and BAA of .212. He certainly came at the right time with the news of Darvish being done for the year. While also adding Chatwood and Montgomery to the mix as well. Let’s hope he can hold up down this final stretch and get the Cubs into the playoffs.
Javier Baez and Anthony Rizzo Lead The Offense
After going five consecutive games scoring only one run and all on solo shots. The Cubs offense the past two games have combined for 15 runs and 23 hits. The offense seemed to have gone through their cold stretch. And with the nearing return of MVP Kris Bryant, it should get interesting down this final stretch of games. Back to the Cubs offense though, Javier Baez is getting back on track as well. Going 9-19 with 2 HRs and 4 RBIs in his past few games. Let’s not also forget the 481 ft dong to deep center that left the bat at 110 MPH. And Anthony Rizzo who hit the game-winning two-run shot in the first inning.
Player Of The Game
I think this one seems a tad too obvious, the player of the game most definitely goes to Cole Hamels. Going 9 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB and 7 SO Cole was in control since he stepped on the mound and never looked backed. Besides a bloop double by Billy Hamilton, Hamels was near impossible to score on last night.
