Brad Wanamaker is Another Genius Danny Ainge Move

In early July, the Boston Celtics signed guard Brad Wanamaker to a one year deal. Wanamaker, who spent last season playing for the Fenerbahce Ulker of the Euroleague, is known for his tough defense and attacking ability out of the pick and roll. At face value, this signing just looks like a Shane Larkin replacement. However, in reality this is more than that. Wanamaker has a chance to become a key player for a contending Celtics team.

Why This Signing Made So Much Sense

As previously mentioned, Wanamaker is going to be the replacement for Larkin this upcoming season. The difference is that Wanamaker brings something to the table that Larkin lacked and that’s veteran leadership. He spent four years at the University of Pittsburgh before taking his talents overseas for the past six seasons. Wanamaker has the veteran experience that this young Celtics roster needs. Furthermore, he will be ready to step up into a big role in case one of the Celtics guards go down with an injury.

Wanamaker’s Time Overseas

Wanamaker spent the better part of six seasons overseas where he averaged a combined 12.8 points and 4.3 assists per game. His best year came during the 2016-2017 campaign when he averaged 16.7 points while shooting 38% from deep. He will be joining former teammate, Daniel Theis, who he played with during his stint with Brose Baskets Bamberg. Wanamaker was able to capture a Turkish League Finals MVP last season.

Expectations for Wanamaker

Going into his first NBA season as a 28 year-old rookie, the pressure is on Wanamaker to prove he belongs in the NBA. Wanamaker has made a reputation for himself as being a hard worker. This should translate to the NBA as he makes young guards like Terry Rozier and Jaylen Brown better players by leading by example at practices. Look for Wanamaker to take on the role that Theis did last season as the unknown overseas stud. This is the opportunity Wanamaker has been waiting for his entire life and I don’t expect him to squander his chance.
