Adrian Peterson has found a new home with the Washington Redskins
With injuries mounting up at the running back position, the Washington Redskins signed Adrian Peterson to a one-year deal. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Peterson signed for the veteran minimum. The move is an interesting one for Washington, to say the least. Injuries have decimated the running back position. Promising second-round rookie Derrius Guice is out for the season. Samaje Perine suffered an ankle injury on his lone carry last week against the Jets. Byron Marshall is out for even longer than Perine.
Washington was left with only three backs that were healthy enough to practice on Monday: Robert Kelley, Kapri Bibbs, and Chris Thompson. Thompson is still recovering from a broken fibula that he sustained against the Saints last November. However, he’ll be available for the Redskins in Week One. With few options left, the Redskins obviously had to make a move.
Enter 33-year old Adrian Peterson. It remains to be seen how much the four-time All-Pro has left in the tank, but Peterson can still be a productive player. Last season, the seven-time Pro Bowler rushed for 529 yards and two touchdowns with the Saints and Cardinals. At the trade deadline, Peterson was traded to the Arizona Cardinals.
Against Tampa Bay, Peterson turned back the clock with 26 rushes for 134 yards and two touchdowns in his first game with the team. He also had 37 carries for 159 yards against the 49ers. Peterson had several poor performances in 2017 before missing the final six weeks of the season with a neck injury. It will be interesting to see how much Peterson will play Friday night against the Denver Broncos. With Week One quickly approaching, the Redskins would be wise to get Peterson acclimated to the playbook as soon as possible.
