The Young Forward Signed a $30.5 Million Contract on Friday.
Two seasons ago, the Detroit Red Wings missed the playoffs for the first time in 25 years. In addition to missing the dance last season, this ended a record long playoff streak. In addition, it seems the Red Wings are on the verge of a rebuild. Rumors are swirling around that their captain, Henrik Zetterberg, may not return. Most importantly,
Detroit’s cap space situation is not exactly ideal for a rebuild. However, a successful rebuild starts with young players. The Red Wing’s re-signed one of their first-round draft picks, Dylan Larkin, who has made an impact upon his arrival to the motor city.
Dylan Larkin’s Career Overview
Dylan Larkin was selected in the first round, 15th overall, in the 2015 NHL draft. The Michigan native has made a significant ripple in the NHL upon his arrival. In his first regular season with Detroit, Larkin finished with 45 points. In addition, he notched his first career playoff goal that same season. The following season, he finished with 32 points, which seems like a drastic drop. However, his best was yet to come. Last season, he finished with a career-high 63 points. Larkin has only been in the league for three seasons, and he already seems like he can be the new face of the Red Wings.
Dylan Larkin: Contract Details
As previously mentioned, Larkin’s five-year deal carries an annual average of $6.1 million. The final year of his contract carries a no-trade clause, which could be key in keeping him in Detroit. However, this leaves a shocking number in terms of spending money for the Red Wings. According to CapFriendly.com, the remaining cap space for the Detroit Red Wings is zero dollars. Yes, you read that right, zero dollars. That alone will cause multiple deals at the deadline and shredded contracts during the off-season. For Red Wings fans, it’s gonna be a long and windy road.
