Rookie Derrius Guice Suffers Torn ACL in Preseason Opener
The NFL preseason kicked off Thursday night featuring 24 of the 32 NFL teams. Rookies from every team were ready to make their debut. One player in particular made his first and last appearance in Week 1 of the preseason: Washington Redskins’ rookie running back Derrius Guice. Guice was diagnosed with a torn ACL after leaving the game in the first quarter versus the New England Patriots. The season-ending injury occurred after being taken down during a 34-yard scramble, which was later taken back because of an offensive holding penalty. He left the game with only 19 yards on six carries.
Guice’s College Stats
Growing up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Guice did not go far from his hometown, signing with the LSU Tigers. While playing three years for the Tigers, Guice had 471 carries for over 3,000 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns. Averaging 7.6 yards-per-carry his sophomore year with 15 touchdowns, Guice was a stand-out player and awarded First-Team All-SEC honors. During his junior year at LSU, Guice suffered a hyperextended knee and was limited in play, but never missed a game because of the injury. After his junior year and receiving Second-Team All-SEC, Guice decided to bypass his senior year and enter the NFL draft. The Tigers running back was picked by the Washington Redskins in Round Two, 59th overall in the 2018 Draft.
Injury Aftermath
Following the Redskins’ 26-17 loss to the Patriots, Guice went in for an MRI. Originally, the injury was believed to be a sprained MCL and the rookie would only be out for the preseason. However, news spread all over social media that it was much worse. Guice suffered a torn ACL and will now be out for his whole 2018 rookie season. After finding out that his rookie season was over, Guice sent out a tweet showing acceptance of his injury.
