49ers Training Camp Injuries Beginning To Stack Up

With Day 9 of training camp in the books, injuries are starting to pile up for the San Francisco 49ers. At this stage, no injuries seem to be too significant. It nonetheless will be sidelining some starting players for at least a short period of time, giving a chance for those 2nd and 3rd string players to make an impact in front of the coaching staff.

Joshua Garnett has not returned to practice since clashing knees with another player during training last week. Garnett re-injured his right knee which is the same knee he underwent surgery on during the 2017 season.

During the last several days it was reported Garnett was seeking a second opinion outside of 49ers medical staff. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that it is looking like Garnett will not require more surgery and instead will continue with rehab. He will not participate in training for at least the next week.

Cornerbacks

Veteran CB Richard Sherman suffered a hamstring injury during Friday’s practice. As a result, Sherman will not take part in practice for the next week and will miss the 49ers opening pre-season game against the Dallas Cowboys. With four weeks until the start of the regular season, there will be no rush in getting Sherman back onto the field. Kyle Shanahan said:

“We’re definitely going to rest him at least a week. We don’t think it’s going to be anything long term. It’s Grade 1, a little higher than we expected, so we’ve got to be careful with that.”

Jimmie Ward has also injured his hamstring. Ward pulled up with tightness to his hamstring after last Tuesday’s training session. Ward did participate in limited training today during individual practice, however, is yet to return to team drills. No time frame has been set for his return, and he is being managed from day to day.

Ward was expected to take over as starting CB should Sherman go down with an injury. The Niners will now have to look to rookie’s Tarvarius Moore, D.J. Reed, and Tarvarus McFadden to step up should the need arise for one of them to start for Thursday’s game.

CB K’Waun Williams rolled his ankle during today’s practice. The extent of his injury is not yet known but is hoped not to be a high ankle sprain. It is unknown when Williams will return to practice at this stage.
