Jimmy Garoppolo Discusses Deep Ball & Connecting With WR’s
With training camp well underway, press conferences and player interviews are full steam ahead. At the completion of day 3, Jimmy Garoppolo discusses deep ball and connecting with the San Francisco 49ers wide receivers.
It’s no surprise one of the most sought-after 49ers players during training camp is, of course, Jimmy G. Fans flock to him in an attempt to try and score an autograph or selfie. Members of the press endeavor to gain that next great interview. Everyone seems to love him. And why not? Alongside that beaming smile and quiet confidence, Garoppolo is already a fan favorite.
With only five starts under his belt, Garoppolo is seen by many as the savior of the 49ers. The next great QB to take the Niners to the Super Bowl and return the team to its former glory.
One possible problem is that some have questioned Garoppolo’s ability with the deep ball and his struggle to make those long throws downfield. Jimmy’s short to intermediate passes are on the money.
However, he was inaccurate at times attempting to complete those deep throws at the end of the 2017 season. Practice makes perfect. But if Garoppolo wants to elevate his game to compete with those elite NFL QB’s such as Rogers and Brady, improvement is needed.
Progress At Training Camp
During his press conference, it was no surprise the QB was bombarded with questions in regards to his struggle with the deep ball. Reporters asked him if there was any concern with this and also with making connections to his WR’s, in particular, Marquise Goodwin.
Jimmy Garoppolo discusses deep ball by replying with:
“No concern. We stayed after yesterday, worked on a couple of them and we hit a nice one today. So, it’s obviously good, you feel better about it when you hit them.
But, it’s probably one of the hardest things to do in football and it’s probably one of the last things that a quarterback and receiver get in connection with. So, we’re working at it every day just like everything else.”
Garoppolo was asked if it was difficult to make adjustments in terms of timing working with so many WR’s.
“You always see in the huddle before you call the play and everything. You look who’s at what position and what not,” Garoppolo answered. “But, I think it’s good that we do that.
Football, there’s a ton of injuries that happen throughout the season so to be able to get those reps with different guys and different O-Line groups and stuff like that, it’s only going to help our team. You hope you get no injuries, but you know it’s going to happen at some point.”
WR Dante Pettis
Jimmy revealed his impressions so far of rookie WR Dante Pettis, Jimmy stated,
“He moves differently than most guys. He has some long limbs, long arms, long legs and it helps him create space with defenders. He has a unique ability, I call it wiggle, whatever you want to call it though, of just his body, moves a certain way and he explodes out of the break and separates a foot from a guy.”

Only time will tell if Jimmy G can connect with that much needed deep ball. If he can, he will be well on his way to becoming the complete package.
