What Does This Mean For The Suns?
The Suns already have a few young big men on their roster. Marquese Chriss and Dragan Bender are two young bigs who have both underachieved thus far. Holmes is the new guy who can come in and take minutes from both of them.
Holmes is a guy who plays hard and contributes. He doesn’t excel at a lot of things, but if he can do all the little things, that’ll be exactly what the Suns need.
Holmes has averaged 7.4 points and 4.2 rebounds per game in his career. He doesn’t really stretch the floor yet though which is something he’ll need. He showed some improvement from deep in the 2016-17 season when he shot 35.1% on 1.4 threes per game. He went right back to 12.9% on 0.6 attempts per game last season.
My takeaway from that is he has the potential to become a decent shooter. I don’t know if he just stopped working on his shot or what, but he needs to get that back. Bigs who can’t stretch the floor at all will really struggle to get a big role in today’s game.
His free throw percentage is something he needs to improve as well. He’s a 68.7% career shooter from the free throw line. It isn’t a terrible number when comparing to other bigs, but it’s definitely something that needs to improve.
He is only 24 years of age, so he has time to improve. If he can continue to improve his game, he can become a key rotation piece of the Suns. This team has a lot of young talent going forward. Holmes has the potential to fit right in with that.
