Darrelle Revis Announces Retirement After 11 Seasons

After 11 seasons, all-time NFL legend Darrelle Revis has retired from football. Revis announced his retirement on social media Wednesday morning, signing off with a heartfelt message to family, teammates, and coaches.

The long-time Jet built a career on shutting down star receivers, earning accolades throughout his playing days. Revis made seven Pro Bowl appearances and numerous playoff runs, eventually earning a Super Bowl ring with the Patriots in 2014.

Revis, a Pittsburgh native, was a breakout high school star at Aliquippa when hometown University of Pittsburgh took notice. His success continued at Pitt, with Revis making an immediate impact as a freshman starter. Revis famously won the College Football Play of the Year award with a 76-yard punt return touchdown against WVU.

After three seasons of success in college, Revis entered the 2007 NFL Draft — where the Jets selected him 14th overall. As in high school and college, Revis made an immediate impact his rookie year. Earning a starting spot in the preseason, Revis allowed only three touchdowns to opposing receivers as a rookie. Throughout his rise as an elite corner, any area Revis occupied on the field became known as “Revis Island.”

Revis spent his last NFL season in Kansas City, playing just five games in 2017. It was Revis’s only NFL season without a turnover and one of just two without an interception.

As Revis calls it a day on a storied career, he is already expected to be voted a first-ballot Hall of Famer. With 29 career interceptions, 111 passes defended (a Jets record), and a Super Bowl ring to his name, Revis certainly deserves it. In the words of the man himself: long live Revis Island.
