Dante Cunningham Agrees To A Deal With The Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs have signed forward Dante Cunningham. He is a very capable player and should help strengthen this team’s second unit. He is the exact definition of an NBA journeyman, the Spurs will be the seventh team he has played for in his NBA career, and he is just 31 years old. Cunningham has played for Portland, Charlotte, Memphis, Minnesota, New Orleans, Brooklyn, and now San Antonio.

Does This Mean Anything For The Spurs Future?

The Spurs still have some big decisions ahead of them and this likely doesn’t indicate anything as to what they’re thinking. Cunningham has shown his ability to play both forward spots and can be a good contributor off the bench for any team.

He has started to really develop his game the past two seasons as well. He has started to really stretch his offensive game as he has become a very capable three-point shooter. After not really shooting the three ball the first part of his career he became a 34% shooter from deep in his four seasons with the Pelicans.

His shooting is one way of how he’s developed into a more versatile player. It’s hard for teams to play a guy at small forward when he cant shoot a three and isn’t a top-tier elite defender. Him being able to hit threes makes him much more playable for the Spurs.

The Spurs have many other shooters but him being able to shoot the three ball well is huge. They could put him in at the four alongside a guy like LaMarcus Aldridge. He’d help stretch the floor to give Aldridge a lot of space inside.

If they do decide to trade Kawhi Leonard, Cunningham is more than capable of playing a key role for this team. They don’t necessarily need to trade for a small forward. They could start rudy gay and Cunningham could play some backup small forward if needed.
