The Denver Nuggets Agree To A Deal To Send Faried And Arthur To Brooklyn

The Denver Nuggets and the Brooklyn Nets have agreed to a salary dump trade. The Nuggets will send Kenneth Faried and Darrell Arthur to the Nets, along with some picks, and will only receive Isaiah Whitehead in return. The Nuggets will reportedly free up $21 million in cap space. They are also expected to waive Whitehead.

Why Would The Nuggets Do This?

The Nuggets wanted to get out of their big contracts, so this deal makes a lot of sense for them. They dumped Wilson Chandler’s contract to the Philadelphia 76ers just over a week ago. With this trade, they’re able to dump even more money.

The Nuggets have a lot of young guys on their roster who are in line for big deals. So clearing cap space is a priority. They recently signed Nikola Jokic to a max deal. They also have players like Paul Millsap, Gary Harris, and Mason Plumlee signed to big deals. Plumlee is a guy they could look to move, but they really wouldn’t want to give up any more assets to make it happen.

How Does This Make Sense For Brooklyn?

The Nets aren’t in contention and they had available salary cap space. This deal makes a lot of sense for them. They can take on teams unwanted contracts while also acquiring future assets like the Denver Nuggets 2019 first round pick.

The draft pick is top 12 protected, but either way the deal is worth it for them. They can take on unwanted deals, which won’t interfere with their cap space for next summer. In the summer of 2019, they’ll have two max contract slots available to get better quickly.

They have a couple solid young players like D’Angelo Russell and Jarrett Allen. Faried and Arthur will help them on the court without hurting their draft position too much. Both teams got what they wanted from this trade. They both should benefit greatly from this deal in the future.
