Kawhi Leonard And The Spurs Are In A No Win Situation

Kawhi Leonard and the San Antonio Spurs seem to be headed for a messy divorce. After this past season ended, which Leonard played in only nine games, he requested a trade. That isn’t a shock due to him and his representatives reportedly not being happy about how his quad injury was handled. Both sides are now in a no win situation. Here are a few reasons why.

Why is Leonard in a no win situation? When he requested a trade, the Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics, Philadelphia 76ers, and others started pursuing him. He also hasn’t done much to help himself in how he’s gone about things. He hasn’t spoken publicly about his health or posted a video on Instagram working out to show that he’s healthy. In the process of being quiet, teams are worried he isn’t 100% healthy, which is huge because they won’t be as motivated to trade for him.

Why are the Spurs in a no win situation? Things between them and Leonard is getting uglier. Due to Leonard being a free agent next summer, the Lakers, 76ers, and others can wait until then to sign him. Star players have nothing but respect for Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich, but San Antonio hasn’t been a destination for star free agents. So having to likely deal him and not getting good value back is a strong possibility.

The Spurs really don’t want to trade him. They know Leonard is a top 3-5 player in the NBA when healthy. The no win situations both are in can get worse if things aren’t resolved. The best hope for the Spurs is to play the waiting game. They have to hope they can persuade him to stay, or they trade him and rebuild for the first time in two decades.
