World Cup 2018: Forsberg Strike Send Sweden Into Last Eight

St. Petersburg, Russia – Sweden have advanced to the World Cup quarter-finals after they beat Switzerland 1-0. Emil Forsberg strike send Sweden into Last Eight.

The first half ended goalless, which saw both sides spur away many chances. Switzerland had the majority share of possession. However, Sweden were well organized in their defensive approach to the game and managed to keep Switzerland at bay.

Sweden had the best opportunities, with Albin Ekdal firing over after a poor clearance from Sommer. He later made a good save to deny Marcus Berg. Switzerland’s best opening led to Blerim Dzemaili shooting over.

Forsberg Strike Send Sweden Into Last Eight

With the game deadlocked, Forsberg found space in the edge of the area and his 66th minute shot looped in off Switzerland defender Manuel Akanji, past Yann Sommer.

Martin Olsson found himself at the center of another dramatic VAR moment. With Olsson advancing on goal, Michael Lang sent him tumbling on the edge of the penalty area. Referee Damir Eskomina initially pointed to the penalty spot. He then showed a red card to Lang. However, he then reviewed his decision with VAR. However, VAR showed Lang’s trip on Olsson to have started outside the penalty area. Nevertheless, Lang’s red card stood. However, Sweden’s penalty became a free-kick.

Sweden will now face either England or Colombia in the quarterfinals.
